Ladies Who Lunch
Tsuruya was a persistent friend.
On Mikuru’s first day in class, a girl she recognised as ‘Tsuruya-san’ ran up to her at lunch and cried, “Hey! Hey, Mikuru! D’you wanna eat lunch together?”
“U…um…” Mikuru shivered, backing away slightly. Tsuruya’s energy was intimidating, and the casual use of her first name made her nervous. “I…”
I’m not allowed to get close to anyone.
“I’m sorry but… but I didn’t bring any lunch.”
This was the truth. Mikuru hadn’t been entirely sure what high school girls of that era ate for lunch, so she’d decided to go to the canteen as research. It was always best to be cautious.
“Ah, well… in that case, bring some tomorrow and we’ll eat then!” Tsuruya beamed at her, undaunted. “You promise?”
“I don’t…” Mikuru glanced left, then right, feeling pressurised. She hadn’t been warned about this at all. “Um…”
It’s OK if I just befriend one person, right?
It’d look odd if she had no friends anyway. It was part of her mission to integrate.
“O… OK.” She nodded, smiling weakly. “I promise.”
Tsuruya looked ecstatic. “You will?” She clapped her hands together. “Fantastic!” And in delight, she pirouetted on one foot, swung her bag over one shoulder and moved to leave the room. She turned back and waved. “See you there then!”
Mikuru lifted her hand to wave back, but the girl was already gone.
Well, that was unexpected…
I hope I haven’t made a mistake…
